Artist books for writers
Value Adding to Embryonic Ideas
Throw away those cheap books with curled up corners. Write your
first words into a portable record. Take it on your travels.
These books are designed to encourage writers to record hand
written ideas in archival material. Write with pencil or
archival inks.
These books will become artworks in their own right. A
sculpture that records the hand written words.
Signed editioned images are already included in each edition of
these books. Increase the value of your ideas. All books are hand
sewn and with linen thread.
Your ideas become a book at their birth.
- Hand made with 100% cotton, acid free, rag paper.
- Contains original etchings made without acid (sun and water).
- Originally created marbled endpapers created with non toxic
paints.
- Only 4 in each edition.
- Blank pages waiting to be filled with your words
- Gold coloured bookmark and tie
- Cover paper hand made in Thailand
- Signed and dated by myself.
Just add your own words and create a finished artwork for more

I am continually developing new works in the Barracks Studio in
Thirroul. For the past few years I have had a love affair with the

aluminium and bronze, printed pages onto fabric, stitched printed
papers, joined plastics and other materials.
My work can be seen at Beach Art Gallery, Thirroul, NSW; Juanita’s
Studio Gallery, Austinmer, NSW P G Printmaker Gallery, Brunswick St

I have been chairperson of the Illawarra Craft and Arts
Network. (ican) Since it became incorporated in 2002.
This group brings together the visual arts and crafts people of
Wollongong City, Kiama Municipality and Shellharbour City Councils,
to share ideas, exhibit work, learn more about their art & craft
practice. ican has approximately 140 members. Meetings are held
monthly at the theatrette of the Wollongong Library. from 6pm - 7.30
pm.
It’s exciting to be part of a new group that is supported by
Community and Cultural services of Wollongong City Council.
New members bring in samples of their work to show to others at the
end of each meeting. Members enjoy positive feedback as well as
finding possible new customers within the network. Members are
generous with their praise, suggestions and encouragement.
Thanks to Raine and Horne Commercial in Wollongong ican
ARTSPACE is exhibiting members works 24 hours per day 7 days per
week. This space has been repainted and refurbished with a new
hanging system installed. Members works are exhibited continually.

membership and will eventually showcase the members works.
Travels
India and Nepal 2003
Safer Colours, Healthy Fun New Work project.
‘Fusions, Graphic Workshop, India and the World 1’
I travelled to New Delhi, India in 2003 to give workshops in safer
work practices in Printmaking. I worked with Pratibha Dakoji and
Mukesh Sharma and her assistant Johnny at Atelier 2221 printmaking
studio in New Delhi.
I exhibited prints in a group show with artists from 4 other
countries at Art Junction Gallery in the Grand Intercontinental
Hotel in New Delhi. In Mumbai I gave a demonstration of solarplate
etching to artists and students at the well known and respected JJ
School of Art.
My slide talk about printmaking was inaugurated in Mumbai by the
Australian Consul General, Mr Don Cairns.
I also visited Maharashtra Nature Park and participated in some
chalk drawing on the walls with some children. This was delightful
experience with the children reminding me about the beauty of
spontaneity. I was also invited to participate in a discussion about
children’s art and connecting art with the environment.I was also
able to share my experiences of the LETS system that I have been
part of in the Illawarra, with the Dignity Foundation of Mumbai. I
hope they are able to start a LETS system in their community.
Two dinners allowed me to meet Indian artists, business people
and the leaders in the community. The Australia-India Council have
supported my 2003 return trip to participate in the ‘Fusions,
Graphic Workshop, India and the World 1’
Mantram Art Foundation of India generously supported my visit both
times in 2002 and 2003. Thanks to them for generously arranging
transfers, contacts, publicity, accommodation and meals. Thanks to
the Indian Artistes Network for arranging support and the artists to
be at the JJ school of art for the Solarplate demonstration. See
links page.
Atelier 2221 studio is available for visiting artists. This is a
professionally operated etching studio that is available for rent.
Cultural exchange
Jan/Feb 2004
Mukesh Sharma has an exhibition planned at the University of
Wollongong as part of his trip to Australia early in 2004. He will
share his printmaking and painting experiences with Australian
artists by visiting studios and artists groups.
As a result of my connection with the Mantram Art Foundation, The
Chemical of Colours Gallery and the Indian Artistes Network, Mukesh
Sharma will be able to experience Australian culture and Australian
artists will be able to see his work for the first time. I will co
ordinate this exchange. If you would like to host a visit by Mukesh
to your studio or house or group, please contact me.
Textiles
While in New Delhi I gave a slide talk to the textile design
teachers and students at NIFT, the National Institute of Fashion
Technology. I showed examples of cold water wax resist used on silk
garments and non -toxic fabric paints used on cotton. Slides of
mixed media included textiles as well as installation of artist
books.
This trip was Funded by the Australia-India Council
Kimberley Country and More ….
The Ian Potter Foundation have supported this part of the trip. I
travelled to Balkot, Bhaktapur near Kathmandu, Nepal. In 2002, I met
printmaker, Ragini in New Delhi who participated in my workshop.
This time, 2003, I stayed in her guest house. I had an exhibition of
solarplate etching and monotype prints, and artists books, in the
NAFA complex which is in an old Kathmandu palace given to the
artists for use by the late King Berenda. My exhibition was
inaugurated by Mr Keith Gardner, the Australian Ambassador in Nepal
accompanied by his wife, Linda. I also gave a monotype workshop at
NAFA, for 22 artists at the Nepal Association of Fine Arts graphic
studio. I was warmly welcomed by the arts community and invited to
many studios in the NAFA building, to attend an inauguration, meet
the artists, see finished works and works in progress. It is such a
pleasure to experience how artists love other artists. The visual
language is universal. See links page.
This Trip was funded by the Ian Potter Foundation
Artist Book Camp
Darwin to Broome 2003 (d2bo3)
I travelled from Darwin with Janet de Boer’s 2 bus loads of
textillians to soak up the images, smells and dust of the Oz North
West before settling into 5 days of artist bookmaking at Kimberley
Camp at Cable Beach, Broome.
This was my first trip to WA and the north west. We experienced
Katherine Gorge, Mataranka Springs, Ord river scheme, El Questro,
The Bungle Bungles of Purnululu National Park, the Warmun Arts
Community, Fitzroy Crossing and the roads between.
I made some books and some prints to take to India and Nepal.

Marbling
Have you tried marbling onto fabrics or papers?

on cotton for quilting or to set off a pocket or trim on clothing.

sewn books.

www.judybourke.com/workshops
Prep glue
Prep glue is a clear mulithesive glue that is flexible, sets clear
and supersedes PVA glues. It joins just about anything to anything.
Prep glue is suitable for silk paper, attaching sequins to anything,
attaching jewels to fabric or paper, book making, joining felt,
attaching leather to any fabric, fabric to glass, wood, metal and
plastics.
Test it first as it may show through thin fabrics. Although not
water proof, if subjected to water after drying the glue will not
re-emulsify and return to full strength after drying again.
Good for general use with fabrics of all kinds, wood, most plastics,
dries clear, flexible, dries quickly on porous surfaces, may take
longer, up to 24 hours on non porous surfaces. Best to clamp it and
leave it. It comes in 125ml, 250, 500ml and litre containers
Demonstrations of the uses of Paints & Dyes

materials and things to do with textiles is available every day. On
the last day of each forum, the finished works created during the
week are exhibited.
I am available to demonstrate the uses of paints and dyes during
these times.

Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and in New Zealand.
For more info see the Fibre Forum website (TAFTA) on my

Some people read the label on airbrush paints and think that they
can’t be used for anything but airbrushing. All paints can be used
for something other than their specifically suggested use. The
airbrush paints are used by quilters to accent the surfaces of
quilts. They can be sprayed using templates and stencils. They can
be sprayed very gently onto warps or stencilled onto fabric. They
can be painted onto baskets, dolls faces, shoes, felt, paper
etc…….airbrush paints dry quickly. They are very suitable for fine
line work.
airbrush paints
are suitable for many surfaces eg fabrics, leather, paper, canvas,
wood, ceramics and clay
waterbased and non-toxic, the colours come in transparent, opaque,
pearl, fluorescent, chameleon and iridescent, easy to use straight
from the bottle, no 2 pack preparation,. With the use of the adaptor
painting can be done directly from the bottle.
Do you have story? Have you won a prize? Had some great successes
